In the early years, the January issue of BYTE usually did not have a specific theme. This left the cover illustration open for any interesting possibility, from greeting the new year to engaging in visual humor. But in January of 1977 Helmers (BYTE's Founding Editor) and Tinney presented a theme they both regarded as important: technology is the environment's best friend!
