ROBERT TINNEY GRAPHICS |
Computers and the HandicappedPrint Dimensions: Edition Size: 1000 Prints Robert Tinney nearly always came up with the ideas for the BYTE covers. First he would talk to the editor in charge of a particular theme to get relevant background information, then he produced a series of sketches to nail down a visual metaphor to represent the theme. In the case of the September '82 cover theme, however, Tinney was having trouble coming up with an image. He was complaining to a group of editors in the BYTE booth at a computer show that the "Handicapped" theme was difficult because visual symbols, such as wheelchairs or crutches, were humorless, awkward and sometimes even offensive to the handicapped. "Well," said one editor, "why don't you just stick a handicapped symbol on a computer keyboard?" |
