Although the artist did not shoot the reference photos for this portrait of Kathleen, the 35mm negative from the family snapshot was still available, and it yielded a very good 8" X 10" print with which the artist obtained the results you see above. Background settings can dramatically effect "mood," and are an important part of a portrait. However, reference photos for the production of portrait backgrounds are not nearly as critical as photos of the subject; the artist can be quite creative and flexible with the background, even to the point of substituting one setting for another.
